TELUS Skins Game Brings World's #1 Ranked Player To Whistler, B.C. July 4 and 5
2nd March, 2005
Record Setting Vijay Singh and Always Popular John Daly To Tee
It Up At Nicklaus North Golf Course.
Canada’s summer golf classic, the TELUS Skins Game,
will be returning to Whistler, British Columbia this year and will
be bringing two of the biggest names in the game to beautiful
Nicklaus North Golf Course.
The world’s number one ranked player, Vijay Singh;
the always-popular John Daly, and two other players to be confirmed
in the coming months, will tee it up July 4 and 5 for $360,000 in
prize money.
“Each year, the TELUS Skins Game is a highlight of
the Canadian summer sporting schedule and the entire TELUS team is
proud to be able to share this event with golf fans from all
corners of the country,” said Darren Entwistle, TELUS
President and CEO. “Everything about this
event - the competition, the challenging golf courses, the
supportive fans - is always first rate, and having Vijay and John
participating guarantees Canadian golf fans another world-class
event.”
Vijay Singh, a TELUS Skins Game Champion in 2001 and again in
2003, is coming off a fairytale 2004 season on the PGA Tour that
saw him post nine victories, earn a PGA Tour record $10,905,166,
and unseat Tiger Woods as the number one player in the Official
World Golf Rankings.
Also returning as a veteran of the TELUS Skins Game is Daly, one
of the most popular players to ever participate in the
event. His trademark sense of humour and long-driving
skills have created some of the most memorable moments in the
event’s history.
“I always look forward to coming to Canada for the
TELUS Skins Game,” said Daly.
“It is one of my favourite events and the people have
always responded when I’ve played there.
I’ve heard nothing but great, great things about
Nicklaus North, and with Vijay also returning, it will make for a
great event.”
The TELUS Skins Game’s return to the Nicklaus North
Golf Course, the site of the 1997 event which featured Jack
Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Fred Couples and Nick Faldo, marks the first
time in the event’s thirteen-year history that it has
returned to a course previously played. This year will
also mark the third time the event has been held in British
Columbia.
The 1997 event is still considered one of the most memorable
Skins Games ever as tickets sold out in under an hour and the
broadcast generated the highest ratings in the event’s
history.
It has also been confirmed that The Fairmont Chateau Whistler
will be the official hotel of the 2005 TELUS Skins Game, hosting
the players and sponsors as well as special sponsor
events.
Other event details, including ticket sale information,
remaining confirmed players and the TSN/RDS Television schedules
will be announced over the coming months.
Over the years, the Skins Game line-up has included many of the
biggest names in golf, including: Nick Price, Ray Floyd, Jack
Nicklaus, Fred Couples, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, Ben
Crenshaw, Greg Norman, John Daly, Ernie Els, Mark
O’Meara, Mike Weir, Ian Leggatt, David Duval, Sergio
Garcia, Hank Kuehne, Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson, the 2004 TELUS
Skins Game Champion.
The TELUS Skins Game is also sponsored by Nicklaus North Golf
Course, the GolfBC Group, Firethorn, Pinnacle/Cobra and The
Fairmont Chateau Whistler.
