Stephen Ames Defeats Nicklaus, Singh And Daly To Take 2005 TELUS Skins Game…
5th July, 2005
Canadian Stephen Ames was participating in his first TELUS Skins
Game this week and he made sure it was a very memorable event for
him as he defeated the legendary Jack Nicklaus along with Vijay
Singh and John Daly to become just the second Canadian to ever win
the annual summer golf classic.
Ames won five skins worth $115,000 at Whistler’s
Nicklaus North today to boost his two-day earnings to $150,000 just
ahead of Nicklaus who finished with seven skins for
$120,000. John Daly placed third with 3 skins for
$65,000 while Vijay Singh, the current number-two ranked player in
the world, was shut out.
“These two days were a real thrill,”
said Ames. “The opportunity to spend two
days on the golf course with Jack would have been enough, but to
also be out there with Vijay and John, made it very
special. Winning the TELUS Skins Game is just such a
huge honour and I consider it a highlight in my
career.”
KidSport Canada was also a big winner today as the four golfers
helped raise over $73,000 for the charity through the
“Charity on the Course” program, but TELUS
generously topped up the donation to $125,000 to support the
children that benefit from KidSport’s
programs.
Ames became just the second Canadian to win the TELUS Skins Game
after Mike Weir earned 10 skins for $210,000 in 1999.
