KELOWNA — Jared du Toit acknowledges he can be tough on himself on the golf course and that is one of the reasons why he loves having his brother Russell on his bag as caddie.

While Jared may be more of a glass is half empty kind of guy, Russell sees that glass as half full. He has an ability to see the positive when Jared is a little down on himself.

“He doesn’t take a lot of stuff seriously so he keeps everything pretty light for me which is great for me because I am almost the opposite on the golf course, very hard on myself, kind of pessimistic,” says Jared, who was playing just his second pro event at the GolfBC Championship at Gallagher’s Canyon Golf & Country Club.

“He is almost the opposite of me so it is a nice balance and it definitely has worked out.”

Russell is 21 and just a year younger than Jared. He is a fine golfer in his own right.

“We were a year apart so every odd year we’d play on the same hockey team and we were always at the golf course together,” Jared says. “So he knows my game really well. And he is a good player himself, he is about a scratch, so he really gets it.”

Du Toit, who fired a course record 10-under 61 in Saturday’s third round, closed with a one-under 70 Sunday to finish tied for ninth place at 12-under par.

HAPPY DAD: Yes, they celebrate Father’s Day in Germany, just not on the same day we do here in Canada.

Sepp Rottluff and his son Max have celebrated their own kind of Father’s Day the last three weeks.

Sepp travelled from Dusseldorf, Germany to caddie for Max the past three weeks during the B.C. Swing of the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada circuit.

Their highlight came last week when Max won for the second time on the Mackenzie Tour at the Bayview Place Cardtronics Open at Uplands Golf Club in Victoria.

Father and son said Sunday it has been a wonderful experience.

“It was very special, especially with the win,” said Max. “It was awesome. We enjoyed even the struggle this week. Having those three weeks come to an end on Father’s Day is fun.”

Sepp had never been to Canada and had never caddied before beginning this little tour of British Columbia three weeks ago.

He said he’d like to return and see more of Canada. He joked that his son needs a better caddie than he can be.

“It is a job for a professional,” he said with a smile.

“It has been a very intensive time for us, especially with the win last week. It has been great. British Columbia is beautiful, especially here in Kelowna. It is very nice.”

Max Rottluff finished tied for 68th place at one-over par after shooting a two-under 69 on Sunday.

By the way, Father’s Day in German is celebrated on a Thursday 40 days after Easter and is part of a federal holiday called Ascension Day.

GIVING BACK: An impressive $150,000 was donated to charity by title sponsor GolfBC and the Chan Family Foundation after the tournament concluded late Sunday afternoon.

A cheque for $50,000 was presented to the Canadian Red Cross to be used for flood relief efforts in the Kelowna area. And $100,000 was donated to the B.C. Cancer Foundation.

CHIP SHOTS: Christopher Trunzer, the director instruction at Gallagher’s Canyon, closed with a two-under 69 to finish the event at one-over par. “I played nicely today,” said Trunzer, who finished the GolfBC Championship in a tie for 68th place. . .

The Mackenzie Tour resumes July 6-9 at the Players Cup in Winnipeg.
