Arbutus Ridge Golf Club and the GBC Golf Academy are thrilled to announce that we have access to a Trackman fitting system for the 2019 season. This unit is a game-changer for the custom fitting abilities of our professionals. Coupled with our TaylorMade and Cobra fitting carts, we are set-up to offer a premier fitting experience in the Cowichan Valley.

Why is club fitting essential? Read More from our Head Golf Professional Andy Hajer:

We've all heard the reasons, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" or "I'm not good enough to get fit for clubs, that's for the pros."

Every golfer wants to play better and hit it farther. Well, I've got a secret; you can do both. All you need to do is get fit and put the right equipment in your bag!

Seniors, have you noticed that your fairway woods go just as far or farther than your driver? It very well could be you don't have enough loft on your driver. For slower swing speeds (Under 80 mph), the ideal launch angle is 13-14 (according to “Club Champion”, a leading club fitting company). To achieve this, most slow swing speed players need 12 to 14 degrees of loft on their driver, and to not be hitting down on the ball.

Do you have a problem slicing? It very well could be the shaft you are using is too heavy or too stiff. Playing these clubs makes it harder to square the club face at impact, get the ball airborne, and create the optimal angle of attack, all leading to erratic shorter shots.

Ladies, how many of you are using a "hand-me-down" men's set? These clubs are likely to be too long, too heavy, and too stiff with not enough loft. These clubs are robbing you from playing better golf and enjoying the game more.

How many of you are using clubs with dated technology? Manufacturers are developing clubs and shafts much lighter than in year’s past, specifically targeted to help golfers with lower swing speeds. Lighter clubs assist you in hitting it higher, straighter, and further! Who doesn't want that?

The club fitting company mentioned above, “Club Champion,” conducted a study (read here) finding the average golfer gained on average, 16 yards of distance with their driver after custom fitting, and were 5 yards closer to their target.

16 yards is amazing but it’s only one benefit, being closer to the green will mean using a more lofted club for your second shot on par 4’s. Instead of hitting a 7 iron you could be hitting a 9, or instead of a 5 iron, a 7. That certainly sounds like a recipe for shooting lower scores.

However, don't just take our word for it. Arbutus Ridge Golf Club member Leon Pidzemecky went through the fitting process in 2018, and this is what he had to say:

"I was extremely happy and satisfied with the club fitting I received. Getting clubs that are properly fit for my swing and swing speed has made all the difference in the world. I am now hitting the ball more consistently and hitting way more fairways. I don't know how much longer I'm hitting the ball, but I can say that I am now able to go for the green in 2 way more often. However, the thing I appreciated most was that at no point during the fitting process did I feel like a was being sold something. The whole time it felt like the fitters were more concerned with finding me the right clubs than they were with making a sale. Don't get me wrong, I still have my bad days, but if you ask me if I'm enjoying golf more after getting fit? Without a doubt."
