The first phone call Greyson Sigg planned to make, of course, was to his dad.

“I think it will be a pretty good Father’s Day present,” Sigg said after carding a 59 in Sunday’s final round of the GolfBC Championship at Gallagher’s Canyon Golf & Country Club.

The 24-year-old native of Augusta, Ga., scorched Gallagher’s par-71 layout with 12 birdies and did not make a bogey. It is only the second 59 recorded since the PGA Tour-Canada-Mackenzie Tour circuit started in 2013. Brady Schnell, at the 2014 ATB Financial Classic in Calgary, has the only other 59 in Mackenzie Tour history.

Sigg arrived on the 18th tee knowing he needed birdie for the magic number. He boomed a drive just a few yards short of the green and had a relatively simple chip to a front left pin. He ran the chip about seven feet by the hole, but drained the putt.

“I definitely would have rather had a tap-in for 59 than a 7-footer, for sure,” he said.

It was, needless to say, the round of Sigg’s life.

“I shot 61 a couple times back home with some buddies, but definitely nowhere close to this in a tournament round,” Sigg said. “I came from behind today with nothing to lose and got it going. I kept it going, knew I had a chance.”

Sigg played the front nine in 31 strokes and didn’t really start to think about a sub-60 score until he rolled in two long birdie putts on the 13th and 14th holes.

“I made those two really good putts on 13 and 14 and knew I had a chance there with 16, 17 and 18 being pretty gettable holes. I was lucky enough to make three birdies there.”

Sigg had the lead at 17-under when he finished his record-setting round. But it did not hold up. Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa, Calif., won a total of 20-par over, beating former UCLA teammate Jonathan Garrick of Atherton, Calif., by a single shot.

Sigg, who had to settle for a solo third-place finish, is beginning his third season the Mackenzie Tour.

“I feel like I’ve had two really good seasons so far and I think this one is going to be even better,” he said.

Prior to teeing it up Sunday, he had averaged 70.0 in nine rounds played at Gallagher’s Canyon. He felt good about Sunday’s round after striping his drive off the first tee.

“I split the fairway here and said, man I’m feeling good about it. I really kind of came out with no expectations.”

He began the day at four-under par and nine shots out of the lead.

“It’s easier to shoot 59 where I was today coming into the last round. I just had it going and luckily enough I was able to shoot 59. . .I’ve got a lot of confidence now. We’ll see what I shoot next Thursday in Lethbridge.”
